Don’t Be Late to the (Teepee) Party!
4 Creative Ways the Teepee Trend Can Delight Your Children this Fall
Published on August 11, 2021
The phenomenon of elegant, tented slumber parties is a trend that has taken off during the pandemic, right alongside road trips and glamping. We now find ourselves rapidly moving from end-of-summer travel and children’s camps to a back-to-school season once again clouded in uncertainty around Covid-19; it’s the perfect moment to explore how the teepee trend can bring an extra dose of charm to celebrations big and small, with more or fewer Covid-19 restrictions, and for a range of budgets.
Below are 4 different teepee party ideas we are dreaming of this fall. Each concept has been assigned a “Covid-Friendly Grade” and can be customized to your personal taste. So, let’s go!
It is amazing to think that between August and October, the sun sets a full two hours earlier each night. While it is so hard to say goodbye to the long summer days, a silver lining of the change of seasons is the ability to pull off an awesome backyard movie night and still get the kids to bed at a reasonable hour.
And how do you take your run-of-the-mill backyard movie night to the next level? With personalized teepees, of course! A backyard movie night can be a unique way to celebrate a child’s birthday, mark a holiday like Labor Day or Halloween (see this comprehensive list for fun Halloween movie ideas), or simply bring neighborhood families together on an autumn weekend.
Set up a teepee for each individual child or family complete with pillows and blankets to keep your guests cozy and warm as the temperatures drop in the evening. Tray tables can be prepared with movie snacks and water bottles; your guests will be grateful for individually packaged popcorn and candies as pandemic concerns linger. String lights and holiday or movie-themed décor will keep your party looking fabulous throughout the night!
Covid-Friendly Grade: 5 out of 5. Absent a Zoom party, an outdoor gathering where children and/or families can stay separated in individual teepees is as safe as it gets!
For a more active get-together, you can consider planning a campout-themed slumber party, set up either outdoors or indoors. Depending on the age group of the guests, the party can center around traditional camping activities like making s’mores or roasting hot dogs over a fire pit, nature scavenger hunts, outdoor games like capture the flag before sundown, and stargazing. Each guest can be set up with an individual tent or teepee and items like personalized flashlights, headlamps or binoculars that can be brought home for use well beyond your party.
Covid-Friendly Grade: 4 out of 5. Depending on whether you host indoors or outdoors, a campout-themed gathering is flexible and can be organized to adhere to tightened Covid guidelines or loosened up for learning pods or immediate families.
Should we once again find ourselves back in a full lockdown situation, we have learned that finding creative ways to mix up the family routine while quarantined is key to happiness! Why not treat your kiddos to a surprise family slumber party night? Set up a large teepee on the living room floor and organize gift bags for the children, as though they were guests at a fabulous party. Organizing the party around a theme your children love – sports, animals, Star Wars. . . you name it! – can bring extra pizazz to the evening. You are guaranteed to brighten your children’s day (and night!) with this stay-in family event.
Covid-Friendly Grade: 5 out of 5. Fully Fauci approved!
Last, but not least, if you have a child who loves to lean into the girliness, consider throwing a super-girly slumber party – traditional, but with a twist. Bring on the fuzzy slippers, eye masks, colorfully decorated teepees and fairy lights, and organize sweet activities that suit your child’s interests like manicures and cupcake decorating. The slumber party guests are sure to be thoroughly mesmerized by this charming set up; whether you get roped into hosting again or not, be ready for more of these irresistible teepee gatherings!
Covid-Friendly Grade: ~3 out of 5, depending on factors such as indoor setup, mask-wearing, and distancing of teepees. If Covid restrictions tighten, this indoor slumber party concept is a keeper for post-pandemic days ahead!
